“What is your dream job/career?” Our Youth Employment Services (YES) manager Jora Washington recently asked this question to more than 20 teens at North Beach Place Teen Center. The open house brought together residents of North Beach Place, teens already involved with Tel-Hi, and their invited friends to learn how YES can help local teens achieve their goals.
Food and get-to-know-you BINGO got things going. Then small groups discussed and shared their hopes and aspirations, framed by these questions:Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to study? If you had a job, what would you save up for? If money was no object, what business would you have? W hat would make your community a better place?
Teens registered for December workshops including Applying for a first job and Writing a resumé, as well as enrichment classes on Hip-hop dance and Capoeira Angola martial arts. The event ended with a raffle of gift certificates and an iPod Nano (for teens) and a $50 Safeway gift card (for adults), prizes that motivated participation in our YES community survey.
YES is Tel-Hi’s newest effort to help under-resourced teens develop into skilled, confident, and engaged members of our community.
