Job Description

Position: Recreation Director

Reports to: Director of Programs

Salary: Exempt – $40,000 to $46,000 (salary based upon experience)

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday with Saturday scheduling to be determined. Full-Time.

 Organizational Description: Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center (Tel-Hi) is a nonprofit organization which provides services and advocacy for residents of northeast San Francisco. Founded in 1890 by Alice Griffith and Elizabeth Ashe, Tel-Hi provides opportunities for individuals and families to enrich their quality of life. Focusing on low- to moderate income children, youth, families, and seniors, we create and strengthen community bonds, provide health and wellness programs, and broaden education and cultural experiences. With an annual budget of $1.8 million, Tel-Hi provides the following programs for the community: Preschool (2 ½ to 5 years), After School Academy (K-5th grade), Expanded Learning Program (6th-8th grades), North Beach Place Teen Center, Senior Program, and Community Organizing—Tel-Hi serves over 600 individuals each day.

Fitness and Recreation Programming: With an innovative and creative curriculum, we hope to increase the physical activities of children, youth, and seniors—particular attention will be focused on those who traditionally are less likely to participate in and enjoy a physical activity program. We wish to provide participants with multiple opportunities to learn, practice, and reap the benefits associated with living an active lifestyle and making healthy choices.

Position Overview: The Recreation Director works under the supervision of the Director of Programs and works closely with all program managers. S/he provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning for recreational programming, and is responsible for the further development, implementation, and expansion of recreational services for all Tel-Hi programs, including special events and community projects. S/he ensures programs are inclusive, developmentally and culturally appropriate, and that activities foster participants’ personal enrichment, leadership skills, and physical development. Incorporating best practices in children, family, and senior services, and providing for the professional development of all program staff, are key priorities of the Recreation Director.

Desired Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of four years relevant program management experience and at minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in the recreation or education field. Candidates must have proven supervisory and leadership skills, excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, and an ability to work well with a diverse population of children, families, seniors, staff, and volunteers. The successful candidate must have the ability to work both as part of a team, as well as independently when needed. Self-motivation, initiative, flexibility, excellent problem solving and people skills, consensus building, and multi-tasking abilities are essential for the position. Excellent written and spoken communication skills are also essential. Familiarity and comfort working with computer applications and the internet is necessary. Experience ensuring compliance with contracts and regulatory agencies, as well as a graduate degree in sports education/physiology are highly preferred. Bilingual English/Cantonese speakers are encouraged to apply.

Position Responsibilities: The Recreation Director is supervised by the Director of Programs and oversees all aspects of recreational programs to ensure curriculum and priorities adhere with the agency’s mission and values.

 Primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead the development and implementation of our Total Youth Fitness initiative with the support of the Director of Programs.
  • Plan, develop, and implement an innovative health and recreational curriculum involving traditional and non-traditional activities for preschool, K-12 th graders, and seniors, addressing the needs and interests of the participants.
  • Research trends and needs of target population on an ongoing basis to effectively assess and strategically plan program operations, including goals, objectives, and procedures.
  • Develop and implement a pre- and post-test behavior/knowledge questionnaire for all participants.
  • Develop a measurement tool to evaluate recreational program services and community needs, and with the support of the supervisor, provide ongoing improvement and development of programs and services offered by the agency.
  • Develop a Health and Fitness Manual to serve as the Total Youth Fitness curriculum, including activities (objectives, lessons, and goals), questionnaires, surveys, local resources, etc.
  • Supervise and train direct care staff and volunteers in implementation of recreational activities, including modeling activities on an ongoing basis.
  • Hiring and supervising of contracted service providers.
  • With direction from supervisor, research and implement a quarterly staff development curriculum to ensure ongoing opportunities for all program managers and direct care workers.
  • Prepare a comprehensive bi-annual report that includes assessment, monitoring, and evaluation of programs.
  • Provide monthly program reports and schedules of activities to the Director of Programs.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of all activities, including hours, surveys, assessments, contractors, and participant feedback.
  • Ensure strict compliance with grant requirements including budgeting, assessing, and reporting.
  • Ensure program activities reflect best practices in youth development.
  • Facilitate group activities and demonstrate knowledge of classroom management and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Organize and maintain all recreational supplies and equipment and secure a safe environment.
  • Represent the agency to the community including collaborative partners, funders, program officers, various supporters, and program participants/families.
  • Network to establish partnerships with schools and outside agencies in the community.
  • Assist in planning and hosting special events held by Tel-Hi throughout the year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Academic and Enrichment Coordinator

for After-School Academy and Summer Youth Development Program

(Grades K-2)

Program:

The Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center is a state licensed facility offering program for pre-school, school-age and middle school youth. The goal of the Elementary School Program is to foster the academic, physical and emotional well-being of our youth. The program provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum which emphasizes academic success and personal enrichment through tutorial assistance, social development, recreation and club activities.

Position Responsibilities:

The Academic and Enrichment Coordinator works under the supervision of the Director of Elementary School Programs and in collaboration with staff, parents and school-day teachers to assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of the program to maintain a culturally and developmentally appropriate program.

Academic and Enrichment Coordination:

  • Assist in the development, scheduling, design and implementation of the enrichment curriculum for the After-School Academy and the 10-week full-day Summer Program.
  • Manage the Lower Elementary Homework Room to ensure a supportive and productive learning environment for all program participants.
  • Provide individualized and daily tutoring and homework assistance for children.
  • Communicate with staff and volunteers in regards to student’s academic and developmental progress and needs.
  • Maintain a consistent correspondence with school-day teachers to increase children’s successes and support their school work and curriculum.
  • Incorporate youth development principles into enrichment activities which provide inclusive, developmentally and culturally appropriate learning experiences.

Supervision of children:

  • Responsible for the safety and supervision of large groups of children.
  • Ensure a safe and positive environment that allows for healthy development and growth.
  • Foster and maintain appropriate relationships with the children.
  • Observe and evaluate children’s needs and progress. Follow-up with appropriate action including discussions with staff and communication with parents and teachers.

Requirements:

  • Working on or holding a B.A. or B.S. in Sociology, Psychology, Education or a related field or has equivalent work experience.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity toward economically disadvantaged and at-risk youth.
  • Working on or holding at least 12 Early Childhood Education Units.
  • Ability to supervise large groups of children.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

Hours :

  • Full time, Monday-Friday, 10:00am to 6:00pm. Occasional evenings and weekends as required.

Salary :

  • $14-16 (depending on experience)
